Customized Prefabrication

Pictured below are three projects by Aectual which use the same parametric design model and robotic system. Once the design and production have been calibrated the system can be easily adjusted for new client’s preferences. Joining parametric design with digital production allows for mass-customization of architecture and building products, while also maintaining the efficiency and precision of prefabrication.

Algorithmic Design

This piece was printed three times with simple variations in parameters chosen by the designer. Embedding of design information directly into the machine-code is made possible through the merging of algorithmic design with automated digital production.

Digital Workflow

Beginning with a sketch or digital model, the initial step is to develop a parametric model with Grasshopper and Python. This model is informed through prototyping and integrates the range of design options, material behavior, and fabrication constraints. Python scripting allows for direct conversion of the design geometry into fabrication data. Lastly, this data is fed into an automated process which adjusts behavior according to the parametric information.
